To help address the North American foundry industry’s need for casting porosity detection, Godfrey & Wing has launched an X-Ray inspection system in its Toledo, Ohio facility. The Toledo installation complements Godfrey & Wing’s existing X-Ray facility in Defiance, Ohio. Together, these facilities benefit automotive OEMs and their suppliers by providing flexible capacity ranging from continuous large volume production to one-off diagnostic projects.

The Godfrey & Wing Toledo facility works with OEMs and suppliers to establish criteria for acceptable levels of casting porosity and other anomalies. Trained X-Ray technicians inspect parts, and provide images and data documenting the size and location of any defects. Non-conforming parts are isolated and removed from the manufacturing process at an early stage.

“The expansion of our X-Ray services allows us to rapidly identify areas of concern
in the casting before porosity causes catastrophic failure in the production cycle.
This enables OEMs to eliminate potential hidden costs and production delays of
scrapped castings caused by porosity.

-Nick Chapman, Godfrey & Wing Operations Manager

Godfrey & Wing opened its 21,000 square foot Toledo facility in 2009. In addition to X-Ray inspection, the Toledo facility will continue to provide vacuum impregnation and pressure integrity testing services to major automotive OEMs. The new X-Ray system has been certified by the Ohio Department of Health for safety.
