Cleaning and Surface Treatment
Falling between the subsurface mechanical properties of shot peening and the burr/flash/scale removal of abrasive blasting is Cleaning and Surface Treatment. While the technology of shot peening rarely allows for a "direct" measurement of the process benefits and the metric of abrasive blasting is generally visual, Cleaning and Surface Treatment (CST) falls into processes that can be measured and monitored on the part itself.
Godfrey & Wing Inc & MecWash Systems Limited have an established partnership for custom engineered cleaning systems, which compliments both companies as well as Godfrey & Wing's North American customer base.
At Godfrey & Wing this takes the form of three main processes:
- Controlled Media Blasting
Performed to achieve a specific micro-finish on the surface of a component. Commonly specified to enhance and add surface area to assist in subsequent bonding operations or where friction is a key characteristic of a component's function. Generally specified as a micro finish. - Conversion Coatings
ROHS compliant conversion coatings enhance the paint bonding capability of aluminum components and provide for corrosion prevention. Where abrasion resistance is not required, Godfrey & Wing's ROHS compliant coatings are an excellent alternative for cost effective corrosion prevention. Generally specified as Salt Spray resistance. - Precision Cleaning and Etching
Used on aluminum where any residual abrasive material may cause contamination above specification. Light soils are removed from the surface of the aluminum then the material is "etched" to expose the sub surface matrix for future bonding. Common applications are high strength adhesion and sealing mating components against oil or moisture penetration. Specifications range from Dyne values to bonding strength.
